The Celestial Confluence

One of the most celebrated partnerships in Carnatic Music in the last century was forged between Semmangudi Srinivasa iyer and M.S. Subbulakshmi, both titans in their own right. Subbulakshmi looked up to Semmangudi as a guru and mentor, learning and polishing number of master pieces from the maestro. Semmangudi was a regular visitor at Kalki Gardens, the residence of Subbulakshmi and Sadasivam. Impromptu singing sessions sans accompaniment, featuring Subbulakshmi and Semmangudi were quite frequent, sometimes joined by other leading musicians of the time. We are lucky to have a few of these sessions recorded for posterity. This album contains a recording of one such session when the two vocalists were joined by K.S. Narayanaswamy, the respected vainika and another of Subbulakshmi's mentors. The result - scintillating moments that envisages the grandeur of the "Triveni Sangamam" or union of India's iconic rivers. Semmangudi, the senior most of the three, exhibits his extraordinary genius in drawing out the true essence of the Kritis and the beautiful contours of the Ragas, with spectacular, sublime and surreal Manodharma. M.S. Amma's voice blendes with Semmangudi's like saffron with milk, the perfect unison of the two doyens, elevating the listener to mystical heights. She sings along with great humility yet undeniably making her divine presence felt in every rendition . Her enunciation of the Sahitya in each composition enhances the prosodical beauty of the kritis.

K.S. Narayanaswamy, a renowned exponent of the Tanjavur style, is known for his graceful, emotive and expressive music. The subtle nuances and the sound of his effortless playing on the Veena along with the two greats, compliment their music and is an absolute treat to the ear. His Veena displays the highest quality of music.
