Abheri

An audava sampoorna raga wih universal appeal and an interesting history.

Abheri is a raga with an attractive sound. The appeal of this raga is borne out by the famous Tyagaraja kriti 'Nagumomu Ganaleni' and also by numerous film songs, whether it is the old classic 'Singaara Velane Deva' from the film, Konjum Salangai, or the more recent A R Rahman hit 'Kannodu Kaanbadhellaam' from the movie, Jeans. Abheri is catchy and its audava-sampoorna structure gives good scope for improvisation, too. The history of this raga is interesting for the fact that its earlier version used a different version of the Dhaivata. The raga that is generally recognized as Abheri these days, with the Chatushruti Dhaivata, was called Devagandhara (changed to Karnataka Devagandhari today), as seen from the raga mudra in Muthuswami Dikshitar's compositions; Dikshitar used the name Abheri for the raga that used the Shuddha Dhaivata, as seen in his composition, Veenaabheri. Some musicians feel that the name Devagandhara should still be used to indicate the difference in the ragas.
