Alleppey Venkatesan

One hour of music by Ariyakudi's disciple, vocalist Alleppey Venkatesan

Listening to Alleppey Venkatesan's music is like reliving the vintage style in modern times. Coming from the honoured and hard-to-emulate Ariyakudi Bani, Venkatesan's singing reflects a good blend of emphasis on sahityanubhava and swara shuddhi. The discipline and stateliness of Ariyakudi's music peeps through, yet Venkatesan holds forth with his longstanding experience by way of his choice of kritis or his raga elaboration, dwelling more on the expected effect of the raga than merely showcasing the raga technically. His fondness for the lyricism in Carnatic music has seen his singing interspersed with interesting pallavi lines, and the delectable viruttams or shlokas he chooses before a great or rarely heard kriti. His laya jnana also reflects his training to play the ghatam. Alleppey Venkatesan today not just has Ariyakudi's tambura but also the glorious tradition of his master to be carried on and which he has been doing very ably.
