Annamacharya, the mystic saint composer of the 15th century is the earliest known musician of South India to compose songs called “sankIrtanas”, which he dedicated to of Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala. The musical form of the keertana songs that he composed, which are very popular among Carnatic music concert artists, have strongly influenced the structure of Carnatic music compositions. Annamacharya is said to have composed as many as 36,000 sankeertanas , of which only about 12,000 are available today. He is believed to have been the avatar of Nandaka, the sword of Vishnu. This feature presents some of Annamacharya's lesser heard compositions.
