Arabhi

An audava-sampoorna raga, and one of the Ghana Pancharatnas.

Raga Arabhi dates back to the 7th century. Among the panns or ragas of ancient Tamil music, it corresponds to the pann, Pazhanthakka. Arabhi is one of the janya ragas of the 29th Melakarta, Dheera Shankarabharanam, and is a raga with a bright feel. Tyagaraja’s masterpiece, “Saadinchane” is a tribute to the scope and effervescence of this raga. The raga is one among the esteemed set of five ragas - the Ghana ragas. The Ghana ragas are supposed to be ideal for tanams. This programme includes a tanam, apart from some of your favourite compositions in the raga. It also includes information about the distinct usages of Arabhi vis-a-vis its close cousin Devagandhari.
