Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar

Music of the master in connection with his birth anniversary on May 19.

Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, or simply Ariyakudi, as he was more often called, was arguably the greatest musician of his time. A student of Ramanathapuram Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar, Ariyakudi was respected even among his peers as the ultimate musician, with musicians such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and G N Balasubramaniam making Ariyakudi's influence and their admiration for him well known. Ariyakudi was known for his unique style of music, whose teasing tempo was easy for listeners to follow but difficult for accompanists. Ariyakudi's tuning of the Thiruppavais is the most widely used version and probably the most influential of his contributions was the concert pattern that is now being followed universally. This programme features a few renditions of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, and is in connection with his birth anniversary on May 19.
