Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar

Music of the revered musician in connection with his death anniversary on January 23.

Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, or Ariyakudi, as he was simply called, was arguably the greatest musician of his time. A student of Ramanathapuram Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar, Ariyakudi was respected even among his peers as the ultimate musician, with musicians such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and G N Balasubramaniam making Ariyakudi's influence and their admiration for him well known. Ariyakudi was known for his unique style of music, whose teasing tempo was easy for listeners to follow but difficult for accompanists. Ariyakudi's tuning of the Thiruppavais is the most widely used version and probably the most influential of his contributions was the concert pattern that is now being followed universally. This programme, featuring a few renditions of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, is in connection with his death anniversary on January 23.
