Audava Shadava

Ragas with 5 notes in the ascending scale and 6 notes in the descending scale.

The parent scales or melakarta ragas in Carnatic music have all 7 notes and they occur in the order srgmpdn-sndpmgr. They are also termed as sampoorna ragas. Among the janya ragas, the terms Swarantara, Audava and Shadava are used to indicate the number of notes in the scale. These refer to 4, 5 and 6 notes respectively. Ragas with 5 notes in the ascending scale and 6 notes in the descending scale are termed as Audava-Shadava ragas. They include common ones like Sama, Saraswati and Manirangu, and others like Malahari, Jayantasena and Gaudamallar. This programme features a selection of such ragas.
