Begada

An important rakti raga in Carnatic music.

Begada is a raga whose sophistication can be matched by few other ragas. With swaras bearing some subtle shrutis, it provides great relish to the performer and listener. Traditionally considered a janya of the 29th melakarta, Dheera Shankarabharanam, its suitability as a janya of Harikamboji is often brought out in debates among musicologists. With its vakra arohana and the includsion of two Nishadas, the handling of this raga can sometimes get limited by certain standard usages. Even the possibility of usage of non-standard phrases is a favourite topic among practitioners, and it all only adds to the interest in this raga. Apart from songs in the raga, this programme also has senior musician and teacher V Subramanyam illustrating the swaras and special usages of the raga.
