Bhadrachala Ramadas

An hour of songs written by the pre-Trinity composer.

Bhadrachala Ramadas was one of the most important composers, if only for the fact that he seems to have inspired Tyagaraja through his devotion to Rama - to the extent that Tyagaraja mentions him in a few of his compositions such as Ksheerasagara Shayana, Kaligiyunte and Brindavana Lola. Ramadas wanted to build a temple to Rama at Bhadrachalam on the banks of the Godavari; hence his name. He took loans to build the temple but couldn't repay them. He was jailed, and while there, Bhadrachala Ramadas sang to God of his frustrations and his condition. The story goes that Rama and Lakshmana came in the guise of small boys and repaid the loan. After his release, Ramadas continued with his devotion to Rama, composing hundreds of beautiful songs, many of which are lost. This programme includes a few of his highly popular and poetically rich keertanas.
