Bhashanga Ragas

Janya ragas which include one or more foreign notes in special phrases.

Bhashanga is a property of a raga where a note that is not part of the framework of the parent raga is used. It adds an interesting twist and also adds to the aesthetics of the raga. Some very popular ragas like Kamboji, Bhairavi,Begada and Ananda Bhairavi fall into this category. Some others that belong to this category of ragas are Saranga, Nilambari,Athana and Devagandhari. In some ragas they are used sparingly used whereas in a raga like Bhairavi the anya swara or foreign note has been incorporated in the scale and is integral to the effective expression of the raga . Ragas have eka,dwi or tri swara bhashangatwa, depending on the number of anya swaras that they take. This programme includes a selection of Bhashanga ragas and presents information with pointers to different aspects.
