Charukesi

A raga that evokes inexplicable emotions of love and piety in our hearts.

Charukesi is one of the melakarta ragas or parent ragas of Carnatic music. It usually ranks high among favourite ragas of listeners. This raga has a special appeal with its ability to convey beautifully a feeling of yearning whether of love or devotion. It occupies the 26th position in the sampoorna melakarta classification, a position that was occupied by Raga Tarangini in earlier classifications. Charukesi became popular with Tyagaraja’s composition ‘Adamodi Galadhe’. The song ‘Manmatha Leelaiyai’ sung by M K Tyagaraja Bhagavathar in a film of the 1940s drew attention to this raga. After Tyagaraja many composers composed in the raga. Whether it is Koteeswara Iyer's 'Neethanappa' or a more recent composition, a pada varnam by Lalgudi Jayaraman, they have added to our understanding of the raga. This programme includes these, among many others, and also gives information on Raga Charukesi.
