Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar

A tribute to the doyen of Carnatic music known for his soulful singing and stunning voice.

Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar had a voice with a 'Bell Metal' quality that reached the back rows of the audience in the pre-microphone era. This, along with his child-like manner, endeared him to audiences. During his successful career spanning seven decades, he attributed all his success to his favorite deity, Guruvayurappan. In between, he lost his voice; after he regained his voice, he also donated all his earnings to Guruvayurappan. As a performer, his creative ability was astonishing; and as a guru, he was sensitive and revered by all his disciples, whom he encouraged and helped to the maximum. Chembai could also play the violin and flute capably, and he has played both instruments on stage. Chembai was one of the stars of the recording era, and was one of the first Carnatic musicians to have a "concert set" released commercially. Apart from having an amazing voice, Chembai was also a musician whose sense of shruti was perfect. This programme is in connection with Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar's death anniversary on 16 October.
