D K Jayaraman

A programme on the much-loved musician, in connection with his birth anniversary on July 22.

D K Jayaraman, like his sister D K Pattammal, was known for his chaste music. Into this sedate and orthodox music, though, DKJ, as he is popularly referred to, could infuse a soulfulness and exuberance that made it irresistible. After learning from his sister initially, DKJ went on to take guidance from a range of masters of the time - Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar, Papanasam Sivan, Koteeswara Iyer, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and Madurai Mani Iyer, among others. This gave his music a wholesomeness and depth, and also made his repertoire enviable large. He could sing the compositions of modern and contemporary composers as much as the established classics of the composer trinity. He gave concerts along with Pattammal, before establishing himself as a frontline vocalist on his own. His music was as effusive and large-hearted as he was. He was also technically adept and could handle pallavis in complex talas with ease.
