Durbar

A raga that combines an effervescence with a stately feel.

Durbar ,whose evolution does not precede the 18th century is today an important raga with a defined structure and aesthetics. Its evolution in less than two centuries to occupy a place of pride in the pantheon of Carnatic ragas shows the intrinsic value and aesthetic appeal of this raga. It is a shadava sampoorna janya of Kharaharapriya. The avarohana has a vakra swara pattern which is the defining feature of the raga. A very similar raga called Nayaki is often described as a twin of Durbar. This programme includes information about the distinguishing features between these 2 ragas along with different facets of Durbar. Compositions of Tyagaraja, who is the architect of Durbar and of a few other composers are included.
