One of the important 20th century composers and a multifaceted personality.

Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar was a musician, composer, charismatic exponent of Harikatha, and a seasoned punster! He has to his credit almost 400 musical compositions, the largest among the post-Trinity composers. The range of his compositions includes many different types of Varnams, as well as Kritis and Tillanas. Muthiah Bhagavatar also created quite a few ragas, with Niroshta, Urmika and Vijayasaraswati among them. His compositions include the ever-popular Western Note, which has come to associated with Madurai Mani Iyer. Muthiah Bhagavatar was Asthana Vidwan of the Travancore and Mysore courts. He lived like a king, and was known for his generosity.
