Hyderabad Sisters

Presenting the music of the Hyderabad Sisters - Bhaskara Lalitha and Bhaskara Haripriya.

Lalitha and Haripriya are the disciples of T G Padmanabhan, a direct disciple of Alathur Venkatesa Iyer. They have carved a niche for themselves with their unique manodharma. Their first performance, during the Navaratri festival in 1960 at Shankara Mutt, Hyderabad, was a great success. Winners of several awards during their school days, the sisters went on to win the All India Radio competition in 1968 and 1969 respectively.

The Hyderabad sisters have specialized in singing raga alapana and neraval, two important aspects of manodharma. In every concert, one raga is taken up for delineation in the true jugalbandi style, where both the sisters alternately sing phrases. This style of singing is prevalent in Hindustani music and has been adopted very efficiently by the Hyderabad Sisters in Carnatic music.
