Jayachamaraja Wodeyar

King, philantropist, philosopher and a prominent composer of Carnatic music.

This programme pays tribute to Jayachamaraja Wodeyar, the last maharaja of the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore, who is among the well known composers of Carnatic music. Wodeyar's musical output numbers close to 100 kritis. The nature of this output, whether it is in the choice of ragas like Bhanu Chandrika, Hamsanatini and Bhoopala Panchama, or in the lyrics which carry deep meanings drawn form the Upanishads and Srividya worship, show a keen and intelligent mind at work. Fascinating as the life was of this multi-facted personality, it also had a poignancy for the trials and tribulations he faced. The programme includes extracts from an interview with author Vikram Sampath, whose first book ‘Splendours of Royal Mysore - The Untold Story of the Wodeyars’, is hailed as one of the most definitive accounts of the Wodeyar dynasty in recent times. This programme is in connection with Jayachamaraja Wodeyar's death anniversary on September 23.
