A feature on the respected vainika, teacher and musicologist in connection with his death anniversary on Dec 13.

Born in 1914, K.S. Narayanaswami learnt music under Vidwan Sabesa Iyer, Sangita Kalanidhi Tanjore Ponniah Pillai and Vidwan Desamangalam Subramania Iyer. He was Lecturer in Annamalai University from 1937 to 1946. At the invitation of the Queen of Travancore, he began to teach Veena in the Swati Tirunal Music Academy and subsequently became its Principal. After this assignment, he went to Bombay and served as the Principal of the Sangeetha Vidyalaya of Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha from 1970 onwards. He was the recipient of many titles and awards and traveled widely in India and abroad. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1968 and the Padma Bhushan and the Sangita Kalanidhi titles in 1977 and 1979 respectively. His soft and graceful playing in the gayaki style was unique and earned him great admiration from connoisseurs of music.
