K V Narayanaswamy

An hour of music by the master of bhava, in connection with his birth anniversary on November 15.

Palghat K V Narayanaswamy's concert career spanned almost sixty years. He was a disciple of Ariyakudi Ramauja Iyengar, but unlike his guru who excelled in madhyama kaala, KVN specialised in vilamba kaala as well. He was influenced by the styles of Musiri Subramania Iyer and the Veena Dhanammal family. These influences gave a soft, soothing touch to his music and enhanced the bhava or emotional element, aspects in which KVN remains unsurpassed.

Palghat K V Narayanaswamy continues to be a role model for young vocalists for the sheer purity of his voice, his exquisite sruti suddham, his mastery of raga and tala, his dignified demanour on and off stage, his vast repertoire, and his manodharma. Above all this, his expertise in neraval rendition led him to be often referred to as 'Neraval Narayanaswamy'.
