Kalyani - Part 2

The programme looking at the 65th melakarta raga and compositions in it.

Kalyani is the 65th melakarta raga, and in the melakarta chart, it goes by the name of Mechakalyani to conform to the Katapayadi system used to name the melakarta ragas. It is one of the important ragas in Carnatic music, and arguably the most important of the prati madhyama ragas. Muthuswamy Dikshitar’s Bhajare Re Chitta and Kamalambam Bhajare are well known kritis, as is Swati Tirunal’s Pankaja Lochana. One of the compositions with an apt story behind it, is Nidhi Chaala Sukhama, where Tyagaraja asks what is better, singing for money or singing the glory of God, the answer being obvious. This is the second part of the two-part Colours of a Raga on Kalyani.
