Koteeswara Iyer

A selection from Kandha Gaanaamudham, the composer's suite of Melakarta kritis.

Koteeswara Iyer was one of the frontline composers in the 20th century. His main contribution to the Carnatic music repertory was his compositions in the 72 sampoorna Melakarta ragas. At a time when compositions in Tamil were not really popular and when vivadi melas did not have the wide acceptance that they have now, Koteeswara Iyer wrote his melakarta compositions in Tamil. His compositions such as Kalitheera Vandharul in Todi and Ghana Naya Desika in Rishabhapriya were widely performed, most notably by Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and M L Vasanthakumari respectively. In recent years, Koteeswara Iyer's compositions in the vivaadi melas have become popular. Of note are Arul Seyya Venum Ayya (Rasikapriya), Edayya Gati (Chalanaata), Antaranga Bhakti (Shadvidha Maargini), Gaanaamudha Paanam (Jyotiswaroopini) and Mohanakara Muthu Kumara (Neetimati). This programme is in connection with his death anniversary on October 21.
