Lalgudi Jayaraman

A selection of compositions of violin maestro in connection with his birth anniversary on September 17.

Lalgudi Jayaraman (Sep 17, 1930 - April 22, 2013), a violin legend and a colossal figure of our times, was also a prolific composer. His tillanas compositions became well known even while he was in his 30s. They even became part of the stock items of many of his own peers. While he began by composing tillanas, he later composed many varnams and kritis too. His varnams have been composed in ragas that are quite unusual for this type of composition. The Neelambari varnam is a case in point as it was the first composition in the raga to showcase its suitability for a fast-paced composition. Lalgudi Jayaraman's compositions are specially sought after in dance too. This programme plays a selection that includes two pada varnams and a song from the movie that won him a national award for best music direction.
