M Balamuralikrishna

Compositions of the multifaceted personality in connection with his birthday on July 6.

Dr M Balamuralikrishna, or Balamurali, as he is universally called, has been one of the most versatile personalities in Carnatic music in this era. Apart from being a multi-faceted musician who also plays the viola, veena and kanjira apart from being one of the foremost vocal musicians, he is also a composer, and a pioneer in all areas of music. He started off as a composer soon after he took the stage as a singer when he was still a pre-teen. By the age of 18, he had finished compositions in all the 72 melakarta ragas. In the six decades and more since then, Balamurali has composed more than 300 pieces in various forms such as kriti, varnam, tillana and padam. Along with that, he has also composed in ragas that he has created, notably his four-note and three-note ragas. Both lyrically and musically, his songs take ideas forward and he continually says something that is quintessentially himself. This Composer Showcase is in connection with Balamurali's 84th birthday on July 6, and the programme plays a few of his compositions that give a broad idea of the range of his musical creations. Of course, since he has also sung a couple of the songs, one also gets a glimpse of the musician in him!
