M D Ramanathan

A feature on M D Ramanathan, the composer, in connection with his death anniversary on April 27.

M D Ramanathan is known primarily as a musician with a unique outlook on music, with his haunting vilamba kaala. His stature as a musician overshadows his abilities as a composer, with one reason being his own reticence in singing or referring to his own compositions except rarely. Another reason is that, though he is known to have composed more than 300 songs, hardly 20-odd of them survive. This is especially unfortunate since it is hardly three decades since his time. M D Ramanathan has also composed operas like "Varada Bhaktha Vijayam" and 'Sundara Ramayanam", and music for a Kalakshetra feature presentation, "Buddha Avataram". He used the mudra, Varada Dasa, as his homage to his guru, Tiger Varadachariar.
