M D Ramanathan

Music of the unique musician, including two of his compositions, in connection with his birth anniversary.

M D Ramanathan was born on 21 May 1923. He was a student of Tiger Varadachariar, in whose honour, he used the mudra Varada Dasa in his compositions. He also taught at Kalakshetra for many years. MDR is known as a musician with a unique outlook on music, with his haunting vilamba kaala renditions. At the same time, he could sing as fast as anybody, and he often punctuated his leisurely renditions with such surprising, fast pieces. MDR's music is something to be savoured rather than experienced casually. His music has a highly personal and inimitable quality, and it is sense of reverie that is typical of the artiste. Though he was primarily known as a musician, MDR was also a capable composer, with more than 300 compositions to his name. But few of them are well known, and these include Hariyum Haranum in Raga Athana and Saagara Shayana Vibho in Raga Bageshri. Another reason for the lack of recognition as a composer also owes to the fact that hardly 20-odd of them survive. This programme is in connection with M D Ramanathan's birth anniversary, and comprises selections from a live concert.
