M D Ramanathan - Concert

A concert by the inimitable musician who lived for music and whose music lived for itself.

M D Ramanathan was a student of the great Tiger Varadachariar, but he was essentially his own musician. Very early on, he decided what his music was going to be, and that there would be no compromises. His music was for himself, and the fact that it appealed to - and continues to appeal to - the cognoscenti, is testament to his sincerity and to his greatness. It is meaningless to try and emulate MDR, much less copy his style. He was too individualistic and his music was too personal for it to come from anyone else. As such, it was music that required the listener to come to it and make the effort to get to terms with it. In recent years, his music has been getting the recognition it has always deserved but never craved from people who have turned into passionate MDR devotees. This concert shows the quintessential MDR and gives a glimpse into what made his music so unique and deep and so fulfilling.
