M S Subbulakshmi

A tribute to the "Queen of Music" in connection with her birth anniversary on September 16.

To many listeners across the world, M S Subbulakshmi was the voice of Carnatic Music. Her music defied definition and classification; while the rigour of her music appealed to connoisseurs, her voice and emotional renditions touched the hearts of lay listeners. She had fans across the country and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had this to say of her - "Who am I, a mere Prime Minister before a Queen, a Queen of Music". Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan gave her the title Suswaralakshmi and Kishori Amonkar labeled her the Aathvaan Sur and Sarojini Naidu called her "Nightingale of India".

This feature presents some of M S Subbulakshmi's most popular film songs and vintage recordings.
