Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan

Compositions of Sivan in connection with his birth anniversary on May 26.

Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan is known for his ragamalika composition in the 72 melakarta ragas - Pranatharthihara Prabho Puraare. At a very young age, Sivan became proficient in rendering alapana, tanam, pallavi, neraval and kalpanaswaras. Once, during a Pallavi competition, he thrilled the audience with an amazing exposition of Narayanagaula raga. He also created a Pallavi in Raga Kalyani, set to Simhanandana tala, consisting of 128 units. A song of Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer was secretly recorded at the Mysore Court on wax cylinders. Unfortunately, the recording was destroyed in a fire at the palace. Vaidyanatha Sivan and his brother, Ramaswamy Sivan, were close collaborators as both artistes and composers. While Ramaswamy Sivan was a composer in his own right, he also contributed in his brother's compositional ventures; for instance, he was the one who composed the chittaswaras for the Mela Ragamalika. This programme, in connection with Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan's birth anniversary, features his compositions and also a couple of compositions of his brother and collaborator, Ramaswamy Sivan.
