Meera

A feature on the Bhakti poet Meera.

Meera, also known as Mira Bai, was a 16th century Hindu mystic poetess sant and devotee of Krishna. She is celebrated as a saint in the Bhakti movement. Though born in a royal family, she lived the life of an ascetic, who considered herself wedded to Lord Krishna. Most legends about Meera mention her fearless disregard for social and family conventions, her devotion to Krishna, and her being persecuted by her husband's family for her devotion. Meera's devotional outpourings are in the form of Bhajans. There are thousands of bhajans attributed to her, though only a few hundred are considered authentic. While miracles are contested by scholars for the lack of historical evidence, it is widely acknowledged that Meera dedicated her life to Lord Krishna, composing songs of devotion and was one of the most important saint poets of the Bhakti movement. This programme presents bhajans of Meera.
