Mohanam - Part 2

A pentatonic scale and an immensely popular raga. The second of a two-part programme.

Raga Mohanam, one of the earlier and universal pentatonic scales, is a very popular raga in Carnatic music. The scale of Raga Mohanam is also used in certain other systems of music, including East Asian and South-East Asian music. This raga has an exclusive charm on account of its harmonious combination of notes .The notes provide for great ease of rendition and yet lend themselves to deep gamakas. The Hindustani equivalent of the raga is Bhup or Bhupali.

This is the second part of the two-part programme. The first part took a look at a range of compositions and at some general features of the raga. This second part includes two varnams and considers some specific aspects and approaches in various compositions.
