Moovar

This is a feature on the composers who are together referred to as the Tamil Moovar.

The Tamil Moovar is a trinity of composers who lived about five decades before the Tiruvarur Trinity (Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri). They were Muthu Thandavar (1560-1640), Arunachala Kavi (1711-1779) and Marimutta Pillai (1712-1787), There is also another trinity of Tamil composers, from a far earlier period - the Tevaram trinity. These poets were Appar, Sundarar and Gnanasambandar. Appar and Sambanthar lived around the 7th century, while Sundarar lived in the 8th century. On this programme, we presents some compositions of these six composers.
