Muthuswami Dikshitar

Kritis of the erudite and pioneering composer who passed away on Naraka Chaturdashi, the day before Diwali.

Muthuswami Dikshitar's contribution to Carnatic music is multi-dimensional. His compositions are microcosms of the entire range of ragas and talas, and their usages. He followed the earlier asampurna mela system propounded by Muddu Venkatamakhi, and is also the first known composer to have used all the 72 melakarta ragas. Dikshitar's compositions offer scope for deep study, with their wealth of lyrical, musical and anecdotal usages. He was also a person learned in Sanskrit and the scriptures, and this knowledge comes across in his compositions, giving them an added dimension. This programme presents a selection of Muthuswami Dikshitar's compositions.
