N Ramani

An hour of music by the senior flautist known for his aesthetics and refined technique.

N Ramani was a highly acclaimed Carnatic flautist, known for his brilliance and mastery over both sruti and laya. A disciple of the legendary T R Mahalingam, he had a distinctive style, one which is famed for its imitation of the characteristics of the human singing voice. Also proficient in Hindustani music, he performed many jugalbandhi concerts in the local and international arena. Ramani was popular for having introduced duet flute concerts and having pioneered the playing of the North Indian bansuri flute in Carnatic music concerts. Ramani was involved in improving flute-playing technique by experimenting with the sizes of the instrument's finger holes and the length of the flutes, and was engaged in extensive music research.
