Nada in Tyagaraja Kritis - 1

In connection with the Tiruvaiyaru Tyagaraja Aradhana festival, a two-part feature on Tyagaraja's kritis on music and sound.

There are very interesting references to music and nada, the musical sound in the compositions of composer Tyagaraja, who himself is known as a Nada Yogi. If he places knowledge of sangita on par with true bhakti as the criteria to be eligible for salvation in Mokshamugalada, he criticises those who brag about their knowledge of raga and laya without bothering to acquaint themselves with the subtleties of the svaras in Vararagalayagnulu. He has also explored nada in all its various dimensions in different compositions. We present such compositions in two parts, and this is the first part of the theme.
