Narayana Teertha

A feature on the life and musical works of Narayana Theertha.

Narayana Theertha was a sanyasi who followed both Bhakti and Nadopasana, as worship. Attaining mastery over all the six Sastras, he went to Varanasi, the seat of sages and learned men, to propagate his spiritual knowledge and philosophy. His manum opus is the 'Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini', a dance drama, which is based on the life of Lord Krishna, from His birth to His marriage with Rukmini. This work of Narayana Teertha is dedicated to Lord Venkatesa at Varahur in Tanjavur, and is said to have been composed on a pilgrimage from Puri to Varahur. These compositions, famous for lyrical richness and beauty of rhythm, evoke the nine 'Rasas' and form an integral part of Indian classical dance as well as the Bhajana Sampradaya. Of course, the original tunes of these songs have been lost; the evocative tunes that we have now have been composed by various eminent musicians.
