Natakurinji - Part 2

A poignant and intense janya of the 28th Melakarta, Harikamboji. Part 2 of the programme.

Natakurinji is a raga that cannot be defined just by the arohana-avarohana. It is one of the 28 ragas in which all three of the Trinity of composers - Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri - have composed in. Natakurinji has great scope for elaboration, with its vakra prayogas and occasional phrases that contribute to the character of the raga. The varnam, Chalamela, in Natakurinji, is probably the most often heard composition in the raga. Natakurinji is ideally suited for tanam, with the sense of comfort that it has in all the three tempos - slow, medium and fast. Its main range is the madhya sthayi, and in the tara sthayi or upper octave, it reaches the madhyama. In spite of the possibilities inherent in the raga, Natakurinji is not as often heard in concerts or in recordings. The programme on Natakurinji is in two parts, and this is the second and concluding part.
