Ninda Stuti

This feature presents compositions that are in the form of Ninda Stuti.

Ninda Stuti kritis are songs in which composers express anger or frustration towards God, for not heeding their prayers. In some cases, the composer seemingly derides certain aspects or qualities of the deity on whom the song is based. These compositions are seen as passionate outbursts of the devotee, who takes liberties with Lord because of the special relationship between them. Even though the sahitya appears to criticise the deity, the songs are an expression of affection, with the composer treating the deity addressed as an equal. Foremost among the composers of Ninda Stutis were Muthuthandavar, Papavinasa Mudaliar and Marimutha Pillai. We also find such songs by Purandara Dasa and Tyagaraja.
