Pazhani

A feature presenting songs dedicated to Lord Subramania at the Pazhani temple.

Lord Subramania, or Muruga as he is known in South India, is said to symbolise youth, valour, love and beauty. The worship of Murugan is detailed in the 2nd century AD work Silappadikaram of Ilango Adigal. Kandan or Murugan is sung in various forms of compositions often found in Tamil, such as Kovai, Antadi, Pillai Tamil, Kavadi Chindu and other types of Chindus, Kalippu, Venba and Agaval. The Kanda Puranam of the 14th century AD scholar Kacchiyappa Sivachariyar is the definitive work on Murugan and His deeds. Arumuga Navalar, in the 15th century AD, wrote the puranam in dialogue form and called it the Kanda Purana Vasanam. Muruga is also the hero of several padams. There are six important shrines dedicated to Muruga, known as Arupadai Veedu. Pazhani is the third in this list of temples. This programme presents songs of various composers dedicated to Lord Subramania at Pazhani.
