Raga Keeravani

R Vedavalli sings an RTP with a pallavi in a complex tala, set in Raga Keeravani.

The Ragam Tanam Pallavi has for long been the showpiece of performance, calling attention, as it does, to the technical competence of the artiste. It also provides a complete experience of all the improvisational elements. It is an added bonus when the kalpana swaras also include a ragamalika section, which most listeners look forward to. In this programme, R Vedavalli, an acknowledged master of the pallavi, sings an elaborate RTP in Raga Keeravani, along with a pallavi in a complex tala, Tisra Jati Triputa, Khanda Nadai. The tala has seven beats, with the stress on the first, fourth and sixth beats. Each beat has a five counts, resulting in a count of 35 for each tala cycle. Vedavalli was a student of Mudicondan Venkatarama Iyer, an expert in pallavis and one of the few masters of the Simhanandana Tala. Vedavalli herself is a musician with complete control over the technical aspects of Carnatic music, and one of the few musicians who handles complex talas with ease. In this episode of Ragam Tanam Pallavi, we have R Vedavalli singing an RTP in Raga Keeravani that covers the aesthetic and technical range of an RTP.
