Raga Shuddha Dhanyasi

MLV, an acknowledged pallavi expert, sings an elaborate RTP in Raga Shuddha Dhanyasi.

The Ragam Tanam Pallavi has for long been the showpiece of performance, calling attention, as it does, to the technical competence of the artiste. It also provides a complete experience of all the improvisational elements. It is an added bonus when the kalpana swaras also include a ragamalika section, which most listeners look forward to. In this programme, M L Vasanthakumari, who was known for her effortless pallavis, often in not-so-common ragas and complex talas, sings a Ragam Tanam Pallavi in the audava raga, Shuddha Dhanyasi. Though a common enough raga, Shuddha Dhanyasi is not too often taken up for elaboration through a pallavi. MLV's renditions were generally to the point, even when elaborate, and her pallavis bear evidence of the enormous amount of creativity that she had as an musician. The pallavi on this programme, Kanaka Sabhesha Jagadeesha Natana Prakasha, is set in Khanda Jati Triputa Tala, Tisra Nadai, a tala with 9 beats and three counts to a beat.
