Raga Sunadavinodini

A detailed rendition of Mysore Vasudevacharya's composition by the inimitable musician.

In the 1960s and 1970s, at the peak of his concert career, Balamurali built up a large and wide-ranging repertoire that included quite a few rare songs, some of which grew to define Balamurali. These included songs such as Dandamu Bettenura, E Daari Sancharintura and Mridu Bhaashana - catchy songs which even today are seldom heard in concerts. There were others such as Nagumomu Ganaleni and Shobhillu Saptaswara around which Balamurali went on to build elaborate improvisations that included alapana, neraval and kalpana swaras. These compositions and the elaborations in ragas that are generally dealt with rather summarily, over time, became typically associated with Balamurali. The composition featured on this programme is Devaadi Deva Sri Vaasudeva in Raga Sunadavinodini, and neither the raga nor the song is exactly a concert staple.
