Ramayana

Songs that describe events from the Ramayana in connection with Valmiki Jayanti on Oct 13.

Rama is the seventh avatara of Lord Vishnu. His birth is celebrated as Rama Navami, on Chaitra Shukla Navami day. Rama is 'Maryaada Purushottam', the embodiment of Dharma. He is revered for his compassion, courage, and devotion to dharma and duty. As the ideal son, he abides by his father's orders and lives in exile in the forest for fourteen years. As an ideal king, his reign - Rama Raajya - is said to be an era of happiness, peace, prosperity and justice. The story of the journey of Rama - the Ramayana - was first written by Valmiki in the 4th century BC. Famous versions of Ramayana include the Ramacharitamanas by Goswami Tulsidas, the Kamba Ramayana by the Tamil poet Kambar, and the Bengali Ramayana by Krittivas Ojha. In Carnatic music, several composers have composed songs dedicated to Lord Rama, none more notably than Tyagaraja. On this feature, we present some songs by various composers that reference the Ramayana.
