Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer

A tribute to the 'Pitamaha' of modern Carnatic music in connection with his birth anniversary on July 25.

Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer was one of the most influential personalities in the field of Carnatic music in the last 60-odd years. Whether it was his music, his opinions, or his decisions, they all had a profound impact on the musicians and musical atmosphere around. He was instrumental in popularizing Swati Tirunal's compositions, and in tuning many compositions of composers such as Sadashiva Brahmendra. His renditions of certain songs such as Deva Deva Kalayami, Navasiddhi Petraalum and Ksheenamai Tiruga have come to be considered the standard, and connoisseurs swear by his versions of ragas such as Varali, Kharaharapriya, Mayamalavagaula, Shankarabharanam and Keeravani, which are widely held to be definitive. This programme pays tribute to Semmangudi on his birth anniversary with soundbytes from musicians and others, and also some of his most popular compositions.
