Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer

A tribute to the 'pitamaha' of Carnatic music in connection with his birth anniversary on Jul 25.

Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer was a vocalist who made a great impact on Carnatic music. He was born on 25 July 1908. The depth of his music and the heights that his career soared to gave him the title of the pitamaha of Carnatic music. Interestingly, his was a voice that defied the conventional parameters of an ideal voice. While he belonged to the golden era of Carnatic music which saw greats like Musiri Subramania Iyer and G N Balasubramanium, he lived long enough to teach and guide many musicians of the current generation too, one of whom is T M Krishna. Semmangudi, as he is endearingly referred to, died in 2003 at the age of 95 on October 31. This programme is a tribute to this legendary musician.
