Sheik Chinna Moulana

An hour of music by the Nadaswaram maestro in connection with his death anniversary on April 13.

Hailing from the renowned Chilakaluripeta School of Nadaswaram playing. Sheikh Chinna Moulana’s ancestors were all Nadaswaram Vidwans. Although a few Hindu players were also trained in this style of playing Nadaswaram, the school exclusively consisted of Muslim artistes. The Nadaswaram playing of T N Rajarathanam had captivated the mind and ears of Chinna Moula from a very young age. His repeated listening to Rajarathnam's gramophone made him successful as a concert artiste. Sheik Chinna Moulana later went on to learn for Duraikannu Pillai, a disciple of T N Rajarathnam and soon incorporated the Thanjavur Bhani in his own playing. Of his five grandchildren (Mastan, Kasim, Babu, Chinna Kasim and Alli Sahib), Kasim and Babu who were trained by Sheikh himself, accompanied him in concerts during the latter part of his career, and are senior artistes in their own right.
