Shuddha Saveri

A five-note raga that gladdens the heart.

Shuddha Saveri is a raga with 5 notes and with balanced intervals among its swaras. The raga has an easy flow and a happy feel. The earlier version of the raga had different swara sthanas for Ri and Dha and this version is known today as Karnataka Shuddha Saveri. Shuddha Saveri as sung today has the Chatushruti Rishabha and Chatushruti Dhaivatha for the swaras Ri and Dha. This raga is also called Devakriya in the raga scheme that Muthuswami Diskhitar followed. Its Hindustani equivalent is the raga Durga, often used in the Karnatik system too. This program presents a selection which includes a classic like ‘Darini Telusukonti’ and a new varnam in the raga.
