Sikkil Sisters

An hour of music of the veteran flautist duo in connection with the birthday of Sikkil Neela on Sep 6.

The Sikkil Sisters, Kunjumani and Neela, are extremely popular artists with a traditional approach to music. However, they were unconventional enough to begin performing on stage, in an age where women concert musicians were rare, with ample encouragement from their father Natesa Iyer, a mridangam vidwan. The Sikkil Sisters are among the very few women musicians who have excelled in playing the flute, an instrument difficult to master. The Sikkil school is known for its strict adherence to classicism, and for its unique playing style, which is as close as possible to vocal rendition. This programme is in connection with the birthday of Sikkil Neela on September 6.
