Simhendra Madhyamam

A prominent prati madhyama raga and the 57th melakarta.

Simhendra Madhyamam is one among the parent scales, the melakarta ragas of Carnatic music. The chakra that it belongs to also includes Shanmukhapriya, Dharmavati and Hemavati each striking in its own way. Simhendra Madhyamam carries a depth of feeling and shringara bhakti is one of the moods associated with the raga. In the asampoorna mela scheme, it bears the names Seemantini and Sumadyuti, the latter being the raga mudra in the well known Dikshitar kriti 'Kamakshi Kamakoti Peeta Vasinim'. Among the songs included is ‘Needu Charanamule’ composed by Tyagaraja. This, along with ‘Natajana Paripala’ is among the kritis of Tyagaraja which bear his name in the lyrics but whose authenticity is in doubt.
