Sindhubhairavi

A popular lighter raga with a devotional feel.

Sindhubhairavi is a relatively recent raga, and borrowed from Hindustani music. It uses the notes of Raga Todi, though in the plain form without any gamakas. However, in keeping with the light character of the raga, Sindhubhairavi is usage-based. It takes liberties with its notes depending on the context, and it is almost up to the musician to handle it as expansively as it allows; the raga can take all the 12 semitones in an octave. Again, given its "lightness", there are not many elaborate kritis in the raga, and hardly any major ones. But it is one of the most popular ragas used towards the end of a performance, and that testifies to its appeal in conveying thoughts and ideas effectively and appealingly. This programme gives information about the raga and includes a few popular and rare compositions in the raga.
